MarkSync is the free and open-source way out: one bookmark library shared across browsers from different vendors, working with each browser's native bookmarking tools, never existing unencrypted anywhere but your own devices.

Questions, answered

What is a sync ID?+

An anonymous identifier for your encrypted data. Together with your password, it lets you access your bookmarks from any browser or device. It contains no personal information whatsoever.

Can the service operator read my bookmarks?+

No. Encryption and decryption happen on your device with your password. The service only ever stores an encrypted blob it cannot open. But remember: if you lose your password, no one can recover your data — back up regularly.

Can I run my own sync service?+

Yes — that's the point. Anyone can self-host the MarkSync API for complete control of their data, or pick from the list of public services run by volunteers.

I'm coming from xBrowserSync — how do I migrate?+

There is nothing to migrate. MarkSync is fully compatible with xBrowserSync: install MarkSync and enter your existing sync ID and password — your bookmarks, folders, descriptions and tags are all right there. Existing xBrowserSync services keep working as they are.

Is it really free? What's the catch?+

There is no catch. MarkSync is GPL-licensed open source, run by volunteers, funded by donations, with no ads and nothing to sell — because there's no data to sell.
